Cheristow home grown, locally and regionally sourced food

Our tearoom reflects our commitment to serving locally sourced products, and has a strong emphasis on our lavender theme.

In this difficult climate we have had to strike a balance between providing quality local and regional produce and price acceptable to you, the customer. We grow as much of our own produce as possible, as well as support other local and regional suppliers.

All the cakes, scones, preserves and chutneys used in the tea room are made on the premises. We grow our own soft fruits, salads and vegetables which are reflected in our menu, thereby reducing air miles and increasing traceability. Our fruit and vegetables are grown as organically as possible. We compost all our kitchen waste, and buy green compost from Ecosci to use as organic mulch as it is full of nutrients, and environmentally friendly.

We rear our own Devon Ruby Red beef, which is made into burgers by Honey’s butcher in Parkham (a few miles away); and also rear our own lamb. (Meat and lamb only available in the Spring and Autumn.) We get our chicken from Honey’s who source it from Kelly’s of Copplestone. We keep free range chickens who provide us with lovely fresh eggs which are used in our homemade cakes and also our homemade lemon and lavender curd.

Parkham Farm (a few miles away) supplies us with deliciously rich mature cheddar cheese. Henaford Farm in Welcome (a few miles away) makes us Lavender Ice Cream using a special lavender extract that we developed together. From the outset we also supplied Devon Spring water from Torrington, and Devon apple juice from Westlake Orchards in Beaworthy.

Rodda’s from Cornwall deliver us their lovely clotted cream and this year have started to supply us with their own milk. If you try our special Sunday afternoon Tea, you will be treated to Scottish salmon, smoked by Tregida near Launceston.

We use Kittos of Plymouth supply premium ham from free range pigs, and West Country sliced ham from Camelot Fayre in Somerset.

Our dry cure bacon is sourced from Complete Meats in Axminister. It comes from free range pigs from farms within a 30 mile radius of Axminister.

And of course, we use Wyke’s butter from Somerset because they have purple wrappers!

This year we have changed our catering supplier and now buy our catering supplies from J&R foodservice and Ilfracombe foodservice – both of whom try to help us source local produce.

Gluten free, dairy free and vegan diets

We try to cater for people with varying dietary requirements whether it be an allergy to peppers, an intolerance to cucumbers, or allergies to wheat, gluten, dairy and soya.

Please ring at least the day before if you have any special dietary requirements. Michelle can make cakes and scones to satisfy most customers, but may not have in stock the ingredients to meet your needs. We usually have at least one gluten and dairy free cake on display, but cakes for vegans need to be made to order.

Our home made soups are suitable for vegans, and are gluten and dairy free. We can bake bread suitable for vegans given two days notice.
